This sensational destination is a must try experience when visiting Jemez Springs, New Mexico.  It’s an adventure you can take in any time of the year.

The natural spring that once peaked above 100 degrees, has cooled a bit over the past several years and now averages temperatures in the mid 90s.

Getting to Spence Hot Springs

The hot spring is only a short 1/2 mile hike from the parking area. While the designated path makes it very easy to find, it can be a slight challenge to locate the area because this stop has no signage pin-pointing that you have arrived at the Spence Hot Springs. You’ll only see a random paved parking lot on the east side of the road.

Health Risks

It’s important to keep in mind that because it’s a natural pool, the water quality is not monitored or tested.

The Forest Service suggests that you avoid getting the water in your nose to reduce the risk of contracting Naegleria Fowleri, a fatal parasitic amoeba. This is common in warm springs.

Lastly, watch out for poison ivy which can be found along the trail.
